Top Careers for Today’s Nurse

When it comes to nursing, the image that usually pops to mind is that of the caring nurse helping people on a unit. They care for patients and are there for them when they need assistance. Nursing is a profession that requires compassion and true love for fellow human beings. While the clinics are one of the areas where a nurse will be able to work today, it is not going to be the only place that you will find them. In fact, in today’s healthcare world, nurses have a host of exciting, high paying careers options that they will be able to pursue.

Working with Children

Those who love babies and children will want to consider working in this field. Some of the specialty careers that one could choose include pediatric nursing, maternity nursing, and even nurse midwives. You will find that you have plenty of opportunities available.

Working on the Psych Ward

Some nurses may find ailments of the mind fascinating as well. A nurse who works in this environment is going to want to know about psychology, naturally. However, it is important to make sure that all of his or her other nursing skills are just as sharp. Patients on these units may sometimes need to have other healthcare needs that require attention too.

Working in Surgery

Working as an operating nurse can be exciting, and it is a great way to learn about the surgical suites and work with surgeons you would not be able to do elsewhere. Surgery is different from many of the other areas of a hospital, and the nurses will have to have knowledge of a host of different procedures to be able to assist the surgeons properly.

Working as a Recovery Room Nurse

Perhaps you want to work with patients in the recovery room when they come out of surgery and recover from the anesthesia. This option is another area of the nursing where nurses are always in demand.

School Nursing

Of course, you might not want to work in a regular hospital setting at all. Another option that a nurse might want to consider is working in schools. The nurses will be able to act as a resource for children sick or injured while at school. They will maintain health records and immunization records in many cases.  They may even teach some of the health classes.

The above are just some of the many options that you will find in the career of nursing today. You will see that there are going to be quite a few different choices that you can make when you are planning your nursing career path. Make sure that you find something that is going to make you happy. It is often a good idea to choose a specialty that is in high demand because it could increase your chance of landing a job.
